Viewing the List of Log Files

LogFile Reporter lists each type of log file on its main page. For each type of log file, more than one version of that log file may appear. For example, the main page may show a General System log file in which information is being recorded this week, along with other versions of this file that contain information from previous weeks.

The following log files appear in the list on the main LogFile Reporter page:

Boot-time messages
Includes information logged by the system during startup (such as the time of the startup, detected hardware, and versions of most system software.)

Mail server messages
Includes information logged by the daemons for the SMTP, POP-3, and IMAP mail servers.

General system log
Includes information logged by the system when a particular type of log file wasn't specified, as well as all kernel messages.

Security log
Includes information logged by the system about root log ins (such as the time of the log in). This log file is not intended as an audit log for tracking security information.

Spool daemon log
Includes information logged by the print spooler about print jobs (such as the time a job was sent to the printer).
